Bottom Line

Predatory behavior is a serious problem with the Whisper app and should be a major concern for parents. In the past several years, there have been multiple cases of teens meeting up with adults for sex following interactions on the Whisper app. In one case, a 12-year-old girl was raped by a 21-year-old man who she agreed to meet with through the app. While concerns over predatory behavior are more than enough to keep your child from using this app, they are not the only concerns you should have. Because of the anonymity Whisper provides, cyberbullying is a major problem as well. Apps that provide similar levels of anonymity have already been linked to teen suicide. Because of the risks associated with using the Whisper app, no child under 18 should have it.

Talking to Your Children

If your child has been using Whisper, you need to discuss your concerns about the app and the reasons they are not allowed to use it. You should have a conversation with them concerning the dangers of meeting with strangers encountered online. Also, try to determine whether or not they were targeted by a sexual predator through the app. If so, you may need to involve law enforcement to protect your child.
